From the former German positions on the Thiepval Ridge, viewing the uphill gradient and marshy ground over which two companies of the 15th Welsh adwanced. The Ancre River is hidden behind the line of trees.

The direction of the advance of the 15th Welsh from St. Pierre Division

The soldiers themselves were amazed at the speed of their advance, with William Shanahan writing:

I believe it was not the High Command’s idea that we should advance so far ahead. I thought only a tidying up of the front line was intended, perhaps the local heights of Thiepval Ridge – a straightening of the line here and there, and things nice and tidy over the winter. As if to appear to confirm the rumours as to whether it was a general advance or not, the battalion was ordered to leave our heavy gear, great coats and valises, behind in our dugouts.
